Titleist 909D Comp Driver Reviewed
It is a 460cc head design which is the largest allowed on the golf market and made from a titanium composite construction. Aimed at the mid to low handicap golfer it helps promote a higher launch angle with a low to mid spin rate.
Let’s explain that launch and spin in more detail. Why a higher launch?? Well it’s a myth that good players and long hitters launch the ball low. Every player has an optimum launch and spin rate with a reasonable club head speed it’s rather higher that you would expect. Think of it like a canon. If a canon has a low launch the canon ball will not travel very far it would simply hit the ground close to the canon’s position. The same could be said for a canon that launches the canon-ball to high it would also go nowhere. So an optimum launch neither to low or high is sort after. The Titleist 909D Comp drivers help deliver a launch angle that is neither too high or too low promoting a longer ball flight.
Then there is the spin. We will all have heard commentators on the TV talk sometimes called a flyer. This is when the ball lies in the rough and when the golfer hits the shot grass gets trapped between the club face and the ball producing a flier. This outcome of the shot is that it has little to no spin as the club face is unable to spin the ball due to the grass getting trapped. The result is the shot is that it goes too far. So low spin makes the ball go a long way. We certainly need this with a driver. With the higher launch and low to mid spin produced by the Titleist 905D Comp driver helps to make it one of the longest drivers on the market.
Other benefits
A great sound and feel is produced by the ribbed internal pocket which dampens any vibration. The blind bore hosel saves weight in the head making it easier to help generate more club head speed. A perfect balance between the shaft and head is the main reason for this feature.
Conclusion
Well worth looking at, everyone wants more distance and the Titleist 905D Comp driver will help you deliver this. A must have driver in the bag in 2009.
The Titleist 909D Comp Driver featuring the trade mark Titleist Driver pear shape head design along with what Titleist are calling a tuned sole to help reduce vibration. The other new feature on the Titleist 909D Comp Drivers is the blind bore hosel which saves weight, gives a better feeling golf club and allows for the many shaft option that the Titleist customs demand with such a player’s golf club.
You can be sure that you will see lots of the Titleist 909D Comp on the many tours as Titleist have a great reputation with the world best players. It has been a name that you can rely and depend on for style with performance for years. Titleist Drivers always look great, feel good and sit square which in the modern day of drivers sitting 2 degrees closed is a huge plus for many good golfers who want to hit the ball straight by their own doing. The question that can always be asked is, is this driver any different to the one before which also offered low centre of gravity and high MOI and all the rest of it? Well on first impressions it does just look like the old one, but in this day and age of changeable shafts, weights and whatever else, the many shaft option that can be put into the Titleist 909D Comp driver can only be a great new feature. I feel that there is a 909D out there for every golfer within reason. The tuned sole does look good and I am sure it does reduce vibration, if it’s enough for a human rather than a Titleist computer to feel that will be in the testing.
Titleist are in a great position where they can release a new driver and they know that the world will want to try. With the tour presence that they will have with the 909D Comp Titleist will create a good demand for the new club. Is it any better than the last one, well if the world’s best want to use it then we can only hope they know what they are doing.
